I no longer practice law anymore." this is a phrase that five years ago i could never have imagined myself saying to colleagues, friends and family. after almost 5 years of undergraduate college and an additional 2 years of law school, i was convinced that the only career choice for me was private practice as a litigation attorney. to do anything less, different or out of the ordinary with my hard-earned law degree was unthinkable and would be viewed as a failure. reflecting on those thoughts and feelings early in my career, i now see that my beliefs were without basis and a result of unnecessary pressure i placed on myself to succeed as a practicing attorney. although i had practiced in the litigation area for my entire career, i had recently come to the conclusion that i was interested in refocusing my practice in the area of trust and estates. in my opinion, one of the best aspects about a law degree is the flexibility it provides and the variety of opportunities that await you because of your education. at the end of last year, i was approached about a position at northern trust bank as a trust administrator. the position was attractive to me because it allowed me to continue to use my legal background and remain connected to my network of friends and colleagues through my work and the local bar. after much thought and consideration, i left private practice in february of this year and i proud to be working at northern trust bank in naples as a trust administrator. in this position, i responsible for carrying out the various trust administration duties such as tax issues, gifting, and distributions, just to name a few, for a variety of different types of trusts. one of my favorite aspects of private practice was working with clients. my new position allows me the opportunity to work with clients as well as their children, spouses, attorneys and accountants ; to ensure that the estate plan the client has created continues to meet their needs. although i no longer dispense legal advice, my legal education is very helpful, as i frequently reviewing and interpreting trust documents to ensure the client's wishes are properly carried out. is there anything i miss about private practice? the only thing i really miss is the sense of familiarity. after almost five years, the law firm setting was familiar to me as spent my days navigating through cases and the court system. in my position at northern everything is new to me, from the issues i face everyday working with clients to navigating through a large international corporation. however, everyday is easier and more familiar as daily tasks are becoming more routine and second nature, but new issues arise all the time and i grateful for the variety. i blessed to work with an outstanding group of professionals who share a common goal of excellent client service. i feel very fortunate to have this opportunity while i still early in my career and i proud of the fact that i finally realized there is a world of opportunities for lawyers outside of a law firm. most important of all, i know i have made the right decision for myself and my family and, yes, there is life after private practice. this article is being presented by the yld bog's quality of life committee. Given that chile was hardly an "economic miracle, " the question arises why it was termed so by people like friedman. to answer that question, we need to ask who actually benefited from the neo-liberalism pinochet imposed. to do this we need to recognise that capitalism is a class system and these classes have different interests. we would expect any policies which benefit the ruling elite to be classed as an "economic miracle" regardless of how adversely they affect the general population and vice versa ; . in the case of chile, this is precisely what happened. rather than benefit everyone, neo-liberalism harmed the majority. overall, by far the hardest group hit was the working class, particularly the urban working class. by 1976, the third year of junta rule, real wages had fallen to 35% below their 1970 level. it was only by 1981 that they has risen to 97.3% of the 1970 level, only to fall again to 86.7% by 1983. unemployment, excluding those on state make-work programmes, was 14.8% in 1976, falling to 11.8% by 1980 this is still double the average 1960s level ; only to rise to 20.3% by 1982. [rayack, op. cit., p. 65] between 1980 and 1988, the real value of wages grew only 1.2 percent while the real value of the minimum wage declined by 28.5 percent. during this period, urban unemployment averaged 15.3 percent per year. [silvia borzutzky, op. cit., p. 96] even by 1989 the unemployment rate was still at 10% the rate in 1970 was 5.7% ; and the real wage was still 8% lower than in 1970. between 1975 and 1989, unemployment averaged 16.7%. in other words, after nearly 15 years of free market capitalism, real wages had still not exceeded their 1970 levels and unemployment was still higher. as would be expected in such circumstances the share of wages in national income fell from 42.7% in 1970 to 33.9% in 1993. given that high unemployment is often attributed by the right to strong unions and other labour market "imperfections, " these figures are 268 and poker hand.

Those who suffered with severe pain, nausea from chemotherapy or other drugs, and those who kept fighting just to stay alive. my malady is fatal only if you want to commit hari kari. at this point the neurologist referred me to cedar sinai hospital in los angeles. believe me, this is a very long trip when you are already super nauseous and are prone to car sickness as well. traveling with a sick sack became the norm. however, the pain center is an excellent place to be and the doctor there has been able to keep the pain under control. he later began reducing the medications a little at a time to determine which one was doing the job. he told me, "this is an art, not a science, " as we experimented with the different drugs. the pain is gone. by slowly reducing the different medications we have found which one is doing job. the cedar sinai doctor indicated most of the side effects would go away as the medications were discontinued and he was right. * now the second part of this presentation is about the church and what happened to me. not only did bruce and chip come to see me but also cards and letters began to fill my mailbox. i also received an occasional phone call, although, i could not talk long or else my hot video poker machines would raise its fiery tongs. day after day, there would be at least one or more cards from someone at church. and now i know the true meaning of "church family." we have heard that term a number of times from our ministers in the pulpit. shrug ; i knew what it meant. but it wasn't until i actually experienced it that i could understand what it really meant. i could visualize the church being blown away by a tornado, but we would still be a church. we wouldn't walk away unless it was to find another place to gather. the love and concern i experienced didn't come from the church point to building ; but it came from the church point to members. ; we are the church now has a whole new meaning for me. i was astounded at the number of people and groups praying for me to get well. and you know what? it worked. the power of prayer coming from a church family has to be the most successful medicine available. and i sincerely thank all of my own family and church family for providing the best medication in the world. for every bad thing that happens to you there is usually something good that comes from it, if you watch for it and listen. i believe god was actually telling me to "sit down, shut up and listen." in my case, it was quite astounding. you have heard bruce say that he can hear god's voice. yea, right!!! well, during all the hours i was in bed i couldn't read or watch tv because of the double vision. so i had lots of time to contemplate a number of different things. i suddenly realized i could hear god's voice. it was quite clear although it was not a booming, lightening striking sound, but it was there. i know, because one night god forced me out of bed at 2: 00 get to the computer to put these thoughts in writing. i haven't had to change many words. these words just poured out of my head. god was pumping them out as fast as i could type. another time i dreamed about something that actually occurred a few days later. i can honestly say that god talks to me. i would like you to know that it doesn't necessarily have to be that booming voice that comes out of the sky. if that is what you are waiting for, you will probably never hear it. it comes by being receptive to listening for it. it could come in a dream. it might come with certain circumstances that are unexpected. it does come with meditation and being receptive to the sights and thoughts that surround you. you can't just give a quick prayer, jump up, put the dirty clothes in the wash, and jump in the car to run errands. how can you hear him over all that noise?. strip poker

Adolescent gambling is a problem in the uk and is related to other delinquent behaviours. for instance, in the uk, a number of studies have consistently highlighted a figure of up to 5-6% level of pathological gamblers among adolescent fruit machine gamblers1, 2. this figure is at least two to three times higher than that identified in adult populations. on this evidence, young people are clearly more vulnerable to the negative consequences of gambling than adults. a typical finding of many adolescent gambling studies has been that problem or pathological gambling appears to be a primarily male phenomenon. other factors that have been linked with adolescent problem gambling include working class youth culture, delinquency, alcohol and substance abuse, poor school performance, theft and truancy1-3. the main form of problematic gambling among adolescents has been the playing of fruit machines - many of which are legal for children to gamble on. most research on fruit machine gambling in youth has been undertaken in the uk where they are legally available to children of any age. the most recent wave of the uk tracking study carried out by mori and the international gaming research unit nottingham trent university ; 4 found that fruit machines were the most popular form of adolescent gambling with 54% of their sample of 8, 017 adolescent participants. a more thorough examination of the literature summarizing over 30 studies1-4 indicates that: at least two-thirds of adolescents play fruit machines at some point in their adolescent lives one third of adolescents will have played fruit machines in the last month that 10 - 20% of adolescents are regular fruit machine players playing at least once a week ; 17% in the latest 2006 mori igru survey ; that between 3% and 6% of adolescents are probable pathological gamblers and or have severe gambling-related difficulties 3.5% down from 4.9% in the latest 2006 mori igru survey. |
