On august 29, 2005, hurricane katrina roared through the gulf coast states leaving in her wake the shattered lives of people and their pets. the world responded with shock and generosity of spirit in equal parts. many from the malibu community spent their own money and resources to travel to the region hoping to make a difference, no matter how small, in the lives of those directly affected by katrina and her aftermath. one family, lloyd and erika coleman and their two small children, lauren age two and lloyd iii "trey" age eight along with their beloved 10-yearold boxer mastiff mix, mitzy, survived the catastrophe and the loss of their home to finally be reunited this week after a full year of separation, thanks to the efforts of a small group of malibu citizens and the national, on-line group stealth volunteers. the colemans, along with the rest of the gulf coast, prepared for katrina's arrival as they always had through the years.new orleans police officer lloyd coleman remained on duty in the city while erika and the children journeyed to dallas for what they believed would only be a few days of a `mini vacation.' at the time, the family dog, mitzy was staying with lloyd's mother, five short blocks away from the coleman home in the uptown section of n.o. mitzy and her littermate mandy loved playing together and they too had weathered countless other hurricanes in their 10 years of life. no one knew katrina would be an exception. in the past, lloyd would always place the dogs inside the house for safety from the storms. this time, as he was on duty, he was unable to reach the house in time to secure the dogs. it now appears that this change of itinerary ultimately saved mitzy's life. katrina came ashore and most felt they had `dodged a bullet.' the damage didn't seem to be as severe as expected. lloyd coleman went home between work shifts to grab a quick nap. coleman awoke to find water covering the floor of the home. he called erika in dallas and told her that he had no idea why there was water in the house. shortly, coleman again called erika and told her the water was still coming into the house and he was trying to place belongings above floor level. subsequent calls to erika over the next hour noted the water in the carport at tire level and then a call saying lloyd was now at their neighbor's home which sat higher, because the water was five feet deep and still rising! there was no communication with the station. all radios were down as the radio tower and backup had been wiped out. in the walmart parking lot, coleman and a group of "outnumbered" displaced officers chose to intervene in the looting that had already begun. for the next few days, the n.o. police officers worked out of their makeshift accommodations in the parking lot. their only source of communication with the outside world was a pay phone which miraculously still worked. erika and lloyd spoke each day at an appointed time. in the succeeding days, lloyd coleman was consumed with the horrific duties of being a police officer in post katrina new orleans. he was concerned about his beloved dog, but had resigned himself that mitzy had most probably not survived. the area houses were under water for almost 10 days. it was nearly 45 days later before coleman, during one of his infrequent trips through his childhood neighborhood surveying damage, noticed something very dirty moving about on a six-foot elevated platform near his mother's still water soaked home. mitzy, thin and covered in n.o. sludge was patiently waiting for her owner's return! coleman quickly scooped mitzy up and spirited her off for a well-deserved bath and real food before securing her with relatives in gretna. in october, longtime local resident sherman baylin had raised enough money to finally make a trip to the gulf with the difficult task of helping rescue as many stranded pets as possible during a brief 14-day period of time. sherman and a group of volunteers were working their way through what baylin referred to as "the projects" in an unnamed section of n.o. she saw apartment buildings with as many as 50 people huddled together and jammed into a single room. baylin began to notice "the shadows began to move." the buildings were `maze like.' there were dogs on balconies but it was unclear how to actually get into the proper space to retrieve each. she found pets secured safely by their unsuspecting owners in their crates, deceased because of their human continued on page 14 and where to play poker in.
